Detroit veteran Amp Fiddler brings Motor City Funk to Tokyo
Funk, soul, jazz, neo-soul, hip hop, house, electronic music, rock… Detroit based singer-songwriter/keyboardist/producer Joseph 'Amp' Fiddler refuses to be confined by one genre. After starting his career in the mid ’80s as a keyboardist for George Clinton’s cosmic army of funkateers, he recorded an album with his brother as Mr. Fiddler in 1990. Following stints with Prince, Jamiroquai and Brand New Heavies, he emerged as a solo artist with the album Waltz of a Ghetto Fly in 2004. Following up with Afro Strut in 2006 and Inspiration Information with Sly & Robbie, Amp continued to reinvent himself while putting out distinctly fresh and funky music only he can mold. From showing J Dilla how to work an MPC, to gracing Moodymann’s house stompers with his smooth vocals, Amp Fiddler has remained an integral element in the history of urban music in Detroit. 2016 saw Fiddler return with a new full length effort, Motor City Booty. While the whole album leaned heavily towards house and disco sounds, Amp’s brand of fun and colorful Funk remained intact, something he made very clear in the song “Funk Is Here to Stay.”
