Jeff Mills “Live at Liquid Room” 30th Anniversary Tour
"What unfolded during those three hours
far exceeded anything any of us could have imagined.
It was more than just laying the foundation for techno culture—
it might have been the greatest DJ set ever played."
—Jeff Mills
For the noble night of the 30-year cycle—Dedicated to “Live at Liquid Room”
It was already past 10 PM. Let's go. I took the Yamanote Line from Shibuya Station and got off at Shinjuku. Emerging from the East Exit, I hurried toward Shinjuku Liquid Room. October 28, 1995—I knew that night was going to be something extraordinary. The first time I heard Jeff Mills DJ was back in 1994, before summer even arrived. The venue was VOX in Brixton, at a party called LOST. In the second room, Jimmy Cotey and Alex Patterson were playing ambient, but no one was there. The entire audience was on the dance floor, dancing to the DJ who had come all the way from Detroit. People were on the floor, on top of the speakers, and by dawn, some were even hanging from the ceiling. What I experienced there wasn't DJing as entertainment, nor was it DJing as art. It was a spiritual rollercoaster, a mind-blowing cataclysm and rebirth of perception—it demands that kind of language to do it justice. For the first time, I heard a DJ who provoked tectonic shifts in the psyche and, indeed, infiltrated the consciousness of most of the audience.
It was the same at Shinjuku Liquid Room. Listening now to the legendary mix CD ‘Live at Liquid Room, Tokyo’ still brings back that sensation. Techno unfolding through Mills' own tracks, Chicago ghetto house, European minimal—all pushing toward a critical point. Welcome to the aesthetics of the future. Thirty years later, the prospect of ‘Live at Liquid Room’ happening again fills me with unbounded joy. (Tsutomu Noda)
In 1995, Detroit techno master Jeff Mills delivered a breathtaking DJ performance at Shinjuku Liquid Room, released as the mix CD “Jeff Mills - Live at Liquid Room, Tokyo.”
Footage capturing this seminal techno mix CD DJ set has been discovered. This video work, featuring newly filmed interviews, will premiere in Japan. His high-speed, all-vinyl set using two turntables is a must-see. This is a rare opportunity to experience his legendary performances from the hardcore to minimal era.
To commemorate the event's 30th anniversary, a world tour will take place, visiting not only Tokyo and Osaka, but also cities like London, Hong Kong, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dublin. Here in Japan, Jeff Mills will specially perform his DJ set from that era once again using analog and open-reel equipment, which he no longer plays with today.
Furthermore, for the Osaka show, a first-ever Japan collaboration with DJ NOBU, originally from Chiba and now active worldwide, has been confirmed.

<Artist Profile>
Jeff Mills
Born in Detroit, USA, in 1963.
A pioneer of “Detroit Techno,” a genre considered the origin of modern electronic music.
Based in Miami and Paris, he has released numerous works primarily through his own record label, Axis, founded in 1992. As a DJ, he performs nearly 100 events worldwide annually.
One of Jeff Mills' signature tracks, “The Bells,” remains a monumental work in techno music, having sold over 500,000 copies worldwide despite being released on analog vinyl.
While a leader in the electronic music scene, he also garners global attention as an innovator across various musical genres, including classical and jazz. Works performed in Japan include Blue Potential, an orchestral piece premiered in 2005 that reimagines Mills' signature tracks for classical music; Where Light Ends, born from dialogue with Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese astronaut aboard the Space Shuttle and former director of the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation; and Planets, a piece Mills composed specifically for classical performance. Beyond music, he actively collaborates with modern art, having created numerous art installations and cinema events at venues like the Centre Pompidou and the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Recently, his improvisational project Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, which began with collaborations with Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, is energetically touring worldwide with diverse musicians including keyboardists, tabla players, and flutists.
In recognition of these activities, he was awarded the title of Officier by the French government in 2017, presented by former French Minister of Culture Jack Lang.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he established the digital distribution label The Escape Velocity to support and discover young techno artists. Releasing 60 works, it contributed to providing young artists with a platform for communication and presentation.
